Help, I am the new leader!
Leaders newly entering an organization find themselves like a cat in a strange warehouse – unfamiliar territory, new dynamics and unwritten rules. The best approach to both getting to know the company and landing yourself well involves a combination of listening, observing and acting strategically.
1. The cat explores the warehouse: listening and observing
A new leader begins by listening and observing. By engaging with employees at all levels, he or she gets a good idea of the culture, expectations and challenges within the organization. This can be done through formal conversations as well as informal meetings in which people can speak freely. In addition, it helps to observe meetings and decision-making processes: how are they communicated, who has influence and what remains unspoken? It is also essential to understand the history and context of the organization. What changes has the company gone through and what are the current strategic priorities? This prevents a leader from jumping to conclusions or inadvertently creating resistance.
2. The cat shows itself: being visible and accessible itself
In addition to listening, it is important to be visible yourself. A clear introduction helps manage expectations and bring employees into the new leader’s methods and intentions. This can be done through “town halls,” introductory sessions or a personal video message. Accessibility is crucial here. An open-door policy, lunch sessions or coffee mornings make it easier for employees to make contact and build an initial bond of trust. At the same time, it helps to achieve small successes quickly. By making approachable improvements, the leader shows that he or she understands what is going on and really wants to make an impact.
3. The warehouse gets to know the cat: building relationships and trust
To build a solid foundation, it is important to invest in relationships and trust. This starts with identifying key people within the organization – both formal and informal. They often have a major impact on culture and decision-making. And can provide a bridge between the leader and the rest of the organization. Trust is created by acting consistently, communicating transparently and showing vulnerability where necessary. A pitfall is making changes too quickly without respecting the past. By first acknowledging what works well and then looking together for areas for improvement, the chances of acceptance become much greater.
4. The cat becomes part of the warehouse: acting strategically and making impact
With a good understanding of the organization and a solid network, the new leader can develop a clear strategy. This means not only setting long-term goals, but also focusing on “quick wins” that show immediate impact. By making operational improvements on the one hand and working toward a broader vision on the other, there is a balance between short-term and long-term success. Throughout this process, it remains important to ask for feedback. And adjust the approach if necessary. When employees sense that they are actually being listened to and their input taken seriously, trust grows and the new leader is no longer seen as an outsider, but as a natural and valued occupant of the warehouse.
Leaders who remove their masks take an important step toward authentic, effective and inspiring leadership. It takes courage to show vulnerability. But the rewards are great: a stronger bond with the team, better communication, more trust and a culture where growth and innovation flourish. Secure Base Leadership emphasizes that it is not the mask that makes a leader strong, but rather the secure base he or she creates for others. At its core, leadership is not about maintaining a facade, but about daring to show the person behind the position.
Strong leadership begins with a good foundation. Build relationships, create trust and make an impact. What approach has worked for you? Do you have any valuable insights? Share them with us!
